What Can An Abdominal Ultrasound Tell?
Ultrasound has become a very important and accurate diagnostic tool in all areas of the medical profession. It is a safe method for doctors to get a look at what is happening inside the patient's body. There are no dangerous emissions and no need for any type of action by the doctor that might cause pain, but very much information can be gleaned from a single ultrasound.
Ultrasound is very usefull and important, and not only in just obstetrics. It is used in cardiovascular studies, can be used in other areas of women's health and men's health as well, and can be used to view muscles, tendons and ligaments. Another very important application is for viewing internal organs. One way for doctors to get a view of the inside of a patient is by doing an abdominal ultrasound.
And abdominal ultrasound uses the same technology and methods used in an obstetric ultrasound. The transducer is moved across the abdomen, and the sound waves that are emitted bounce back. This information is then transferred to a monitor in the form of an image on screen showing what is inside the abdomen.
Your doctor or medical professional may call for an abdominal ultrasound for many different reasons. Anything that might create a need for your doctor to view such organs as kidneys, spleen, liver, gall bladder, pancreas and the abdominal aorta will make an abdominal ultrasound a necessity. This type of ultrasound brings images of all of these organs.
When you hear the phrase "Abdominal ultrasound" it may sound like a technical and potentially painful procedure. The reality is that it is completely painless. The ultrasound technician will simply apply some gel to your abdomen to increase the conductivity of the sound waves through your skin, and then touch the transducer to your skin. This will not hurt at all. There is a chance that in order to get a good look at certain organs there may be a need to press the transducer past organs that may blocking it, causing him to put pressure on your skin, but this will be temporary and, while painless, may be uncomfortable.
Your medical professional or doctor will advise you beforehand if you should be fasting for a period of time before the Ultrasound, or if you need to drink a lot of liquid for the ultrasound to be most accurate and readable. Be sure you wear loose fitting clothing that can easily be moved away to clear your abdomen for the ultrasound scan.
Once all the information, images and data has been collected by the technician and given to your doctor, your doctor may talk to you about it right then, or call you back so he can have a chance to take a look at it first. With an abdominal ultrasound your doctor is given a good picture of what is going on inside you and will be able to create an effective treatment plan to help you achieve the best possible health.
