The Need For Prostate Ultrasound
Diagnostic ultrasound is constantly being used in all areas of medicine. It is the safest way for health care professionals to get a look at what is going inside the human body. This has enormous effects on almost all areas of medicine, but ultrasound can go farther and help in guiding during surgical procedures so it often is not necessary to open the patient up for a view and access of the area to be worked on.
With all its various uses and applications, one small but vitally important use is in the case of prostate ultrasound. The prostate is locate in a place that is difficult for doctors to get a view of, but with a prostate ultrasound its possible to see it clearly and make deductions about its health and the possible necessity for any type of treatment or intervention.
In most usuall ultrasounds, the transducer is simply scanned across the skin over the area that needs to be looked at. However, the prostate is in such a location that it is impossible to get a good image from outside the body. This calls for the use of an internal probe.
The specially designed and shaped transducer enters the body through the man's rectum. This may sound extremely uncomfortable, but really it is not painful, and, while awkward, is the best way for the technician to get a perfectly clear picture of the prostate. It does not take too long for him to collect the necessary information, either.
The most important image or information the ultrasound technician will want to observe is the size and shape of the prostate. There are many different conditions that can cause alteration in these measurements, and this is very useful information.
Also, it is extremely important and vital to look for any abnormalities in the area, including nodules on the prostate. This type of growth could signify the beginning or development of prostate cancer. Of course the earlier this is detected, the better the chances for good treatment.
Another vital and important use for the prostate ultrasound is if there is a need to get a biopsy or sample of a nodule located on the prostate. If this is necessary, the prostate ultrasound allows the doctor to easily and safely take a sample by watching his movements and being guided by the image on the monitor.
Of course there are a number other tests that a man may need to undergo to determine the exact problem with and level of health of his prostate, but a prostate ultrasound is the very best for giving a view of the size and shape as well as locating any potentially harmful growths in the area. This means it makes it possible for doctors to know what needs to be done to best help the patient.
