When a woman goes in for a standard ultrasound to look at the womb and fetus, the ultrasound transducer is placed atop the abdomen and the image is taken through the skin. With a transvaginal ultrasound, the transducer gets a closer view of organs that naturally lie within the pelvis, making the topical ultrasound ineffective in viewing them.

With a transvaginal ultrasound, the transducer is located on the end of a type of wand which is inserted in the vagina. This gives the sonographer a very clear view of all the organs that lie past the cervix.

Although the term “transvaginal ultrasound” may sound a little daunting or frightening, it is not a painful procedure and can be very helpful for you and your doctor to take a closer look at what areas need to be viewed for better and more accurate diagnosis and treatment.

So lets look at when is your doctor likely to order a transvaginal ultrasound? Here are a few of the things that might cause him to call for one:

*Pain in the pelvic area or bleeding – There are many things that can cause these symptoms, and a transvaginal ultrasound can help your doctor determine just where the problem lies. I might be a case of ovarian cysts, or unreleased eggs, or blocked follicles. It could be a case of endometriosis, wherein endometrial tissue grows in the wrong places, causing complications and blockages. There may be benign uterine tumors called fibroid tumors. Of course there may be some other type of pelvic infection or complication. All of these can cause cramping, pain or bleeding.

* Help with fertility – One type of transvaginal ultrasound can locate eggs or ripe follicles and determine if it is ready for release, as well as its quality and chance of fertilization. Transvaginal ultrasound is also used for women having in vitro fertilization.

* In early pregnancy – In early pregnancy, the womb is still too far down in the pelvis for the technician to get an accurate picture from a regular ultrasound so a transvaginal ultrasound may be ordered to look at the fetus and determine its size and health, as well as the woman's health.
