Uses For Ultrasound Doppler Imaging

If you could only Imagine living a few hundred years ago before the advances in medicine that we have today. A doctor had very little to go by to determine what exactly was going on inside the body. Really, educated guessing was the name of the game, and it meant that many illnesses were misdiagnosed, and that there was rarely every diagnosis of a problem before it showed significant symptoms.

But luckily we don't live in those days. Modern technology has discovered x-ray, MRI and ultrasound imaging to give doctors an actual picture of what is happening within the body. This means early diagnosis in many cases, and also that there is more targeted surgery and other procedures to treat different conditions within the body. No doubt this is one important reason why life expectancy is so much greater these days than it was in the past.

One of devise's that give doctors images of what is happening in the body is ultrasound. There are actually a few types of ultrasound. Here we will talk about the Doppler ultrasound.

Ultrasound Doppler imaging uses Doppler measurements. These are able to tell whether blood is moving away from or toward the probe. It can also determine its velocity. This is very helpful in many medical exams and procedures, such as in looking at heart valves or detecting reverse blood flow in hypertension.

In fact there are actually three different types of ultrasound Doppler. A spectral ultrasound Doppler gives information in the form of a graph. A power Doppler can give information about deep areas of the body. A color Doppler gives images showing the direction of blood flow in a color image.

Unlike all of the other ultrasound, Doppler is given in a lower range is therefore audible to humans. This is the method used to hear the heartbeat of the fetus in the womb, as the Doppler detects and reflects that flow of blood, emitting the telltale pulsing sound expectant parents wait to hear. Of course this is not actually the sound of the blood flowing, but rather a synthetic reflection of the detected blood flow.

Some of the instances when ultrasound Doppler is used routinely is in such procedures as

*locating and evaluating blood clots in blood vessels

*locating plaque in the blood vessels that causes constriction of the vessels

*imaging the vascular system and heart

*determining reverse blood flow in the liver vasculature

All of these are situations that could not be determined years ago, to the point the directional blood flow was indeterminable. Therefore, any illness that came about because of this was undetectable, not to mention untreatable.

Happily for us, we do live the days when devices such as ultrasound Doppler are used on a daily basis to save the lives of people around the world.
