You Can Become An Ultrasound Technician
As we are all aware there are many people who love the thought of working in the field of medicine, but don't have the drive or desire to spend many years at medical school. Fortunately there are many great careers in the medical field that require less schooling, but still offer a rewarding and fulfilling job working in the health care profession. One such career is that of an ultrasound technician.
The ultrasound technician (often just referred to as an ultrasound tech or a sonographer) is the person in a doctor's office or medical facility responsible for performing ultrasound scans on patients. They are also responsible for making and keeping medical records, preparing work schedules and evaluating equipment involved in sonography.
But how can a person become an ultrasound technician and what does it take to become one ? Because of the technical and medical knowledge required for this job, it is necessary to get a very specific ultrasound education. This is usually a program that can be completed in about two years.
A person interested in taking up a career as an ultrasound tech would do well to have an interest in math, biology, computer science and health and to have taken classes in those areas in high school. It is also a great help to study medical terminology before even beginning your ultrasound education.
Then, it's time to locate a good school offering a two year degree in ultrasound technology. Often community colleges offer such a program, as do vocational schools. Before you enroll in a course, make sure that the program is one that has been accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
Also, familierize yourself with the various types of ultrasound technician positions available. There are many different specialties you can look into such as echocardiography, abdominal, OB GYN, neurosonography and opthamology. This means you can choose a field that you are more interested in and find a position there.
After you have completed your graduation, your next step is to register with the American Radiological and Diagnostic Sonographer Association as a professional ultrasound technologist. You now have the credentials you need to start looking for a position in hospitals or clinics in your area.
This part is what it is all about and it is the most exciting, as you are waiting for a job to come your way. Be persistent in applying and be confident in any interviewing and testing you may have to go through during the application process. Soon you are sure to find a position that you will be happy in for years to come.
So as you can see, it is only a matter of a couple of years before you can have the career you've dreamed of working with patients and doctors toward improved health care for your patients.
